5 Fall Trends for the Workplace

It all begins with an idea.

1. Denim Tailoring

Chic, clean cut, and cool, this trend can be seen across runways for the Fall 2024 season. Classic cut blazers and wide leg pants are being created in a sleek navy denim for a fresh, modern take on the “clean girl aesthetic” capsule uniform that has overwhelmed our wardrobes for the past few years. Luckily for the corporate girlies, unlike the siren trend, dark denim tailoring can be easily transitioned into office styling.

Anthrapologie Kit High-Rise Wide-Leg Utility Trouser Jeans $148

One of the easiest ways to wear this trend is in a trouser leg jean, like these Kit jeans from Anthropologie. The dark wash combined with the clean tailoring and stitched pocket detail make these a step up from your usual straight leg. If you work in an office setting these do require a bit more dressing up- pair them with a clean mock neck and a crisply tailored blazer for your fall work uniform.

Cinq a Sept Lou Tie Cuff Topstitched Blazer $495

The dark denim blazer is one of my favorite ways this trend is manifesting- the perfect canvas for a topstitched detail typical of denim, these blazers feel fashion forward and a little more relaxed, a subtle way to mix it up with your usual office style. Wear this style with a tailored trouser or over a floral dress to go all in.

Ulla Johnson Astrid Tiered Denim Maxi Skirt $312

Ditch your casual denim column maxi from 2023 for this updated, more formal full denim midi skirt style. We are seeing a massive return of the full skirt this year, but I have to say the denim fabrication on this style is so chic and timeless, it makes it perfect for transitioning to the office. This piece speaks for itself and can be worn with something as simple as a white tee and ballet flats, but for a more formal office dynamic try it with one of your favorite button downs or a fitted sweater.

2. Color

We’ve all heard of colorful falls- but think of this year’s autumn runways as spring 2.0. While we’re still seeing the same (and perhaps even more) tailoring, layers, and classic shapes for fall this year, designers are embracing nontraditional colors to bring a fresh feel to their typical trenches and wide leg pants. Swap our your accent shoes for a full purple pantsuit or throw a chic lemon colored trench over your every day button downs to bring your own sense of style into the office. The colors to look out for are turquoise, all greens (chartreuse to hunter, you can’t go wrong), deep purple, burgundy, and yellow.

Chelsea Double-Breasted Seasonless Wool Blazer $495

A pop of color for spring is nothing new, but for fall we are used to pulling out our deep burgundy, brown, and green. Mix it up this year with a spring green tailored blazer, still a classic piece but such a standout it can be thrown over a simple outfit. To style it in full trend for this year, try a fully color blocked tailored outfit with a colorful tailored trouser and blouse.

Ann Taylor Weekend Topstitched Pant $129

Like I said, tailored wide leg trousers in a colorful pop will make all the difference in your office look this year, and while we may be used to burgundy for fall, the difference is in the styling. Take something traditional like these burgundy wide leg weekend pants from Ann Taylor (she’s making a comeback y’all) and bring the look into high end fashion by styling them with the less traditional colors of the season- lemon yellow, lavender, and turquoise.

Polo Ralph Lauren Roll Neck Knitted Jumper $204

I know at this point you’re probably over hearing me talk about lemon yellow for fall, but come ON. How have we not done this before?! This clean, fitted roll neck Ralph Lauren yellow sweater is literally the perfect way to bring this gorgeous color into the office- thin enough to be styled under a blazer, but still has the chunky knit feel you crave from your fall sweaters- I want to see this styled with a wide leg tailored plaid pant, skinny brown belt, and if you’re really going for it, a denim blazer thrown over the top. Ok, that’s it, I’m running to my closet now to put that exact look together.

3. Apron Necklines

A seeming homage to the trad wife trend, the apron neckline has been gracing the fall runways from Monse to Altuzzara. Personally, I think taking a trope born from housewives working in the kitchen and recreating it in tailored suiting materials perfect for the workplace is sort of a middle finger to the resurgence of the trad wife- not to politicize a neckline, but why not have some fun with it while we can, right?

Anthrapologie Ponte Apron Vest Top $78

Last year we were all about the traditional, v neck vest with suit pants or short, but this year we’re raising the bar for the workplace with the tailored vest in a chic apron neckline. I know we’re all sick of seeing these cute office trends that are totally unwearable in business environments, but it’s just been styled wrong! Of course for a casual dinner or brunch this top is so cute alone with your favorite jeans, but for the office when we want a bit more coverage, you have a lot of options. This can be styled over a long sleeve turtleneck or crewneck tee, or layered under a relaxed blazer to make it office appropriate, and also give this trend a more unique feeling.

Sam Edelman Cross Back Maxi Dress $97

Make your life a little easier with a one piece look for the days you’re running late and just don’t have time to put a full outfit together. This Sam Edelman apron neckline dress is so classic with the full midi skirt, and for the office it’s easy to pair with a cropped cardigan or clean cut jacket styled over it. For layering, definitely keep it cropped to accentuate the full skirt and cinched waist!!

Abercrombie 2 Pack Ribbed Sweater Tanks $70

For easy office layering, keep it super easy and simple with this Abercrombie 2 pack. For an office capsule wardrobe you need those easy layering tops, and this way you have the white, you have the black, something to go with every outfit. The straight neck goes so well under a blazer. Think of these as your new mock neck.

4. Florals

Florals, for spring? Groundbreaking….circle back 4 months later and they’re suddenly fresh again. Not only are the spring trends sticking around for fall, we’re bringing the florals into the fall season as well. These florals are going to be a little more sophisticated than your typical spring chintz- we’re seeing large, engineered floral designs coming through in an array of colors and textiles. This is an easy style to pair with the colorful tailoring at the office- throw your yellow sweater over a floral dress or skirt, or go that extra mile and find an exquisitely tailored floral coat to wrap around a more subtle, traditional fall look- either way, we can’t deny this year we are feeling springtime on the runway, and it’s going to make it’s way into the office.

Rag + Bone Stevie Embroidered Floral Blouse $350

An embroidered floral is much more demure, much more mindful and cutesy for fall than a large, gaudy print. This is how we’re bringing florals into fall fashion, and it’s perfect for the office. The embroidery on this Rag + Bone blouse adds a textural element to the piece as well, so you can go pretty subtle with the rest of your look and let the blouse speak for itself.

N21 Green Satin Floral Embriodered Knot Flat $139

An embroidered statement slide can be used to pull together a maximal, colorful look or to be the accent piece in a more subtle look. Either way, you can’t deny these vintage inspired flats are a beautiful and unique way to show your personal style with a retro twist, and still experiment with a trend.

Cinq a Sept Astrid Floral Design Embroidered Trench Coat $278

A classic belted trench is a must for fall, but the way cinq a sept added an embroidered twist to this minimal style is so chic, so well done, adding just the right amount of feminine to this style. If this isn’t you go to fall coat, I don’t know what is. I even found it 60% off for you guys- love!!!

5. Plaid

I guess we all know at this point, the gossip girl, preppy (country club preppy, not lululemon preppy) is back with a vengeance, and it’s showing in the many, many variations on plaid, from the boho approach of Chloe to the prep school inspired show from Tommy Hilfiger. And yes, new gen, we call it preppy because it comes from a shortened version of preparatory school style. Find another word. It’s easy to see how this classically autumnal trend can be transitioned into the workplace, but I’m excited to see more of the rugby style details worked into it, and I really want to see it taken to the next level and mixed with the colorful tailored accents and florals. I know y’all won’t disappoint.

Beverly Hills X Revolve Plaid Blazer $179

We all know the cinch waist blazer is back with a vengeance, leaving her relaxed cousin in the dust. This plaid style from revolve is perfectly tailored to accentuate your waist and give that hourglass shape without being too exaggerated- not something we generally go for in the day to day at the office unless you’re literally Anna Wintour- and if you are, hi queen, how the hell did you end up reading this teeny tiny blog about office style when your entire wardrobe is couture?

Nic + Zoe Plaid Tulip Hem Midi Skirt $158

We already know the full skirt is back, but something I’ve been loving to mix up the traditionally tailored plaid look is moving this classic print onto a more flowy slip skirt style like this Nic + Zoe midi. Throw a blazer over it or go for the classic slip skirt, boots, and sweater combo.

Revolve Colorblock Plaid Suit Trouser $88

I said I wanted to see the more creative, rugby style in our plaids for the office, and these pants from revolve are a perfect representation of that. The side color blocked stripes and patch pockets in dark brown give a very intentional, old prep school feel that will kick your solid plaid pant’s butt. Imagine these with a chocolate brown sweater, or a patch pocket jacket?? Need.
